Species, speciation... and definitions




Species can be an easy term to understand, but once you start to introduce other topics such a speciation it can get pretty confusing. It was confusing to me once speciation was introduced! It no longer was just the simple definition as outlined above. We went over allopatric and sympatric speciation in detail in class, drawing it out really helped my understanding. The more topics that are introduced, the species definition no longer becomes simple and to some that are unfamiliar with these topics can be hard to define. We have to make sure these topics can be easily explained so those that are confused can be taught easily!

1.) A great example of convergence from the "Improbably Destinies" Chapter 1 was the example of caffeine-producing species. 2.) Convergent evolution is when multiple species have similar traits but do not have a common ancestor. The multiple species independently evolve these similar traits. Divergent evolution is quite the opposite of convergent evolution. Divergent evolution is when related species have evolved similar traits, while convergent evolution is for species who have evolved similar traits and do not have a common ancestor. 3.) The example in #1 showcases convergent evolution because it talks of how these multiple species, cacao, tea, and coffee all produce caffeine but they are on different branches of the evolutionary tree as the diagram below shows. Sexual Selection

Sexual selection typically acts on males of the species due to male-to-male competition. I learned a lot in our in-class activity about sexual selection, especially with the comic strip we went over. I didn't think there could be a variation of successful mating strategies, it just depended on the situation! I would like to further explore the topic of female choice in sexual selection.
